Vietcombank CEO named Vietnam central bank deputy governor

Nguyễn Phước Thanh, CEO of Vietcombank, the country’s fourth largest lender by assets, has become a deputy governor of the central bank.

Thanh’s appointment was confirmed by Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng last Friday following recommendations by the State Bank of Vietnam and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Thanh, 56, also a board member since 2008 at Vietcombank, formally known as the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Việt Nam, was ordered to assume his new position the same day.

He replaces Trần Minh Tuấn, one of six deputies to Governor Nguyễn Văn Bình, who retired June 1.

Thanh, a native of the Mekong Delta province of An Giang who has a master’s degree in business administration, started his banking career in 1982 at the central bank’s An Giang branch.

He had also worked for Agribank and the An Giang Jewelry Company.

He joined Vietcombank in 1991 and became CEO in 2008.

In April shareholders reelected him as CEO for until 2018.

Vietcombank is expected to name a replacement for Thanh this week.

VnEconomy quoted an unnamed source as saying it could be Nghiêm Xuân Thành, a spokesperson for the central bank and recently elected member of the Vietcombank board.
