Hồ Chí Minh City to add over 100 high-end public toilets

The Hồ Chí Minh City Department of Transport is enlisting private investment in the building of more than 100 public toilets of four to five-star standards after the first ten ones won public support.

A source from the department said they have received the go-ahead from the municipal administration to set up the toilets at public places including parks and bus stations across the city’s 24 districts, news website Thời báo Kinh tế Sài Gòn Online (The Saigon Times) reported Monday.

The toilets will use private funds and have construction and hygiene standards on par with those at luxury hotels.

Sacombank sponsored the construction of the first ten such toilets that are serving free of charge in the city’s bust downtown areas.

The bank is also funding their operations, including staff salaries.

Each toilet of 60 square meters is built at a cost between VND800 million and VND1 billion (US$37,600-47,000) and is paired with an ATM.

The bank is not allowed to put up advertisements around the toilet but social campaigns under its name are acceptable.

For instance, Sacombank has run several environmental slogans around its sponsored toilets at Lê Văn Tám Park in District 3.

Hồ Chí Minh City will need around 1,000 public toilets, including several hundred ones in the downtown, according to the department’s projection.

The common public toilets in Hồ Chí Minh City are mobile ones that are smaller, not always clean, and users have to pay a fee of up to 20 US cents.
